Holidays
Best long haul in August
1winterblues · 18/01/2022 09:45
Thinking of a special holiday for my & DH big 50 birthday.
So was thinking of somewhere long haul but we are tied to August due to children and school holidays.
We are happy with beach or sightseeing holidays. Children will be 8, 10, 15
Any suggestions of places where the weather is going to be ok ?

Peru is brilliant then. We went with Families Worldwide (I think they still exist!). It’s brilliant and we all really enjoyed it. We went to the rainforest too. You could also look at Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. This would be unforgettable! We loved it all!
I would also consider Canada and Alaska. Both perfect in August. We have also been to Boston and then to Cape Cod and further up the coast. This works well in August too. You need to plan all of these in good time as accommodation gets booked up.
South Africa will be in its winter months but it’s a good time to see whales in Hernanus. . Late August would be better. The game reserves like Kruger are fine at this time of year. It’s not beach season but there is so much else to see. I would also recommend Kenya. It’s high season in some areas but again the game reserves are brilliant and it will be special. Zambia and Botswana are great for safaris at this time of year too.
We are keen on wildlife! But in August these are great family destinations.

@TizerorFizz what age where your children when you took them to Ecuador

10 and 13. We went on a boat which was a “family” week. 3 couples all with children. 2 younger than ours I think. Look at companies such as Audley who feature lots of boats. We went with Ultimate Travel Co. It’s not cheap but it’s utterly wonderful!

We were advised not to go to Galapagos in August as it's very dry (so a bit barren) and the sea can be quite rough.
I'd second British Columbia, Canada and also Borneo is a good destination at that time.

I'm looking at Antigua, Aruba and Barbados, all apparently safer from any hurricanes.
Also the Maldives, just accepting there will probably be the odd shower.
Mauritius or Seychelles

Well you don’t want to go to the Galápagos Islands when it rains. The weather is still warm but it’s a bit windier. Sea conditions might not be so calm but there are boats which are pretty stable. Tour operators will advise on this.

Caribbean isn't great in the summer either. Cheap for a reason - really humid and lots of flies.

California. We had a fab trip to California in August when my kids were 6 and 9.

Vietnam. Fly into Hanoi and make your way south taking in the wonderful sights. Plenty of gorgeous beaches, architecture, history, fab food. Finish in HCMC to fly home. Lots of family travel companies offer tours if you want company, intrepid, exodus etc, but also perfectly doable yourself.

US or Canadian Rockies
Tanzania for the great migration
Northern Territories or N. Queensland
We like wildlife too

We went to Barbados last summer holiday - still in July. I wouldn’t go later. And definitely not the Maldives.

Canada west coast was pretty awesome.
would avoid Caribbean personally or would go earlier.
did LA in august wasn’t too bad.
all our other long haul holidays have been January / February in the last few years.
we loved Ghana as pretty undeveloped
