LG is beautiful (we stayed at Riva)
I'd say a car would be useful there's plenty to see all around the Lake. Boat trips, there's a cable car to take you up Monte Baldo from Malcesine. Venice is doable although it is quite a long trip

Car can be handy, but often the campsites (if big) will do day trip buses to nearby attractions and if on lake ferries will get you to all the gorgeous places.

We hired a car but we like to get out and about most days.

We took the train to venice for the day and it was nice chilling on the train.

Gardaland - good full fun day . There are buses running and many places offer bus tickets and tickets ( do your sums as some can be a rip off). Ferries are easy to catch but times can be a bit funny so keep a look out. You can hire a car for a few days if you plan to explore areas ( Valpolicella great wine region). Train to Venice has been said easily done.

sorry for the late return to this thread. thanks for the ideas, folks. am v excited. i think tbh i'd like to try and manage without a car for one of the weeks, but the airport trips complicate things, so will prob end up hiring a car for all 15 days.
