Do I need birth certificate for passport

Pretty much that, if I’m not in possession of my child’s birth certificate and can’t get hold of it.. will I still be able to apply for a UK passport and how ?

Get a copy from the registrar? We somehow misplaced DD’s birth certificate so got a copy when we got her first passport.
