Paying for cabin storage on flights

Jet2 are offering an option to pay for guaranteed cabin storage at £3.50 each way. Our flights include 10kg of cabin baggage.

What happens if we don't book it and there's no space in the cabin left? And, how does it work. On all previous holidays, I've just walked on, found a space in the overhead storage snd lobbed my bag in. They're saying there's only 39 spaces left for cabin storage with 3 weeks to go ...

If you don't book it you will have to pay at the airport and it is considerably more expensive. Some flights are not allowing the use of overhead lockers at all, like those to Italy, and on other flights they are reducing capacity to avoid people being in and out of the lockers. For the sake of £7 I would just pay.

I think that so long as it doesn't exceed the dimensions or weight limit for "cabin" baggage, then if you don't pay the extra and there isn't room in the lockers your bags will be reclassified as "hold" luggage at the boarding point, so just means you have to allow a bit more time at the other end for baggage reclaim, but at no charge. if it does exceed the limits then you would be charged of course.

I presume your hand luggage will just be put in the hold if you don't pay which is what we prefer anyway. I bloody hate all the (actually rather bulky) 10kg bags stuffed in the overhead lockers.

If you're going somewhere that Jet2 sells package holidays to (eg Malaga, Alicante, Canaries) via Jet2holidays, we've always found that the lockers on those flights have plenty of space because a lot of people will be on Jet2holidays bookings, which include hold luggage in the price, so they don't bother with a 10kg cabin bag, just a small bag for valuables and things they need during the flight. Therefore it's likely to be an unnecessary waste of money.

Airlines are restricting how many 'big' cabin bags can be taken on as the crew aren't allowed to help load and unload it into the lockers anymore, and anyone who's ever been on a packed Easyjet or Ryanair flight will now how much of a drama it would be if people had to sort it out themselves!

Some airlines aren't using the overhead lockers at all but letting you check more in for free, some are limiting so they can be sure there's ample space in the lockers.
