Hi everyone. I am very luckily being taken to New York the first weekend in November by a friend. I wondered if any of you could recommend any hotels? I have been a couple of times but always left it to DH where to stay coz he knows NYC really well. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated. TIA.

The only time I've ever stayed in New York since I was first there was for a wedding (we lived only about 20 miles outside the city so no point staying over usually). On that one occasion we stayed at the Washington Square Hotel which was lovely, and right in Greenwich Village.

sorry--am NOT trying to push it, meant to say.

By the way, I'd be delighted to take over for your dh in the New York Info dept.

Hi wizzymum. I would quite like to be near the park too tbh. There's nothing quite like Central Park on a Sunday morning. I love it!! But Expatkat-I think you are now my New York correspondent!! I have been 3 times but was just led by my knowledgable DH!! Ussually in the direction of the shops. What we would like I think is funky but boutique/cutting edge not neccesary. But a good bar is! The main criteria is 2 beds but that's my problem!!I guess the location is most important. I really like the look of your Washington one Kateandthegirls. That might be a lovely place to stay.
The shopping I fancy is obviouosly big posh dept stores but I will be on tight budget and I love vintage. So vintage and flea markets.
God I am in dream land here.I MUST get my boys up and return to the reality of a pissy day in Newxastle. Thanks girls-Soapbox-will check out the Library later. It sounds wonderful.
Thanks all of you.How will I ever make a decision about anything in my life ever without consulting the oracle that is MN??? Shreddies or Cheerios for the boys this morning?

Hmmmm. Shelbourne is not funky. I'll have to rethink. Problem is that as a NYorker I rarely stay in hotels myself. . .

For vintage & more funky shopping, downtown is the place to be, so perhaps worth considering Kate's suggestion, which is in a BEAUtiful neighborhood. I get a bit sentimental when I think about Wash Square Park. . .oh no, I miss New York (Bad attack of homesickness all of a sudden.)

How about this hotel

spook · 14/10/2004 18:14

Hi Thomcat! Thanks honey.Tried it-no room at the inn. The only places left really are the Algonquin and the Giraffe. (it's marathon weekend. Obviously that's why I'm going)
