Myself, dh, plus almost 2 yr old - having a long weekend away in 2 weeks time - flying to Malaga, but then where? I thought Estepona or Nerja, somewhere a bit family oriented, nice beach, nice town to mooch around ... give me your thoughts please

I've not been to Estepona but have been to Nerja. There are some stunning caves there with amazing rock formations, well worth a visit, and there is a cafe/restaurant with a terrace which has a lovely view. We mostly go to Burriana beach which has the best access with little ones but we do go to the Balcon and the beach there too. Nerja is nice!

Thankyou westcountrylass. Anyone else know of anywhere nice within an hour's drive of Malaga?

Nerja- Estepona has the same kind of ponces that you find in Marbella.

Nerja is v.pretty and much nicer

Nerja Nerja

All the way.....quiet, relatively unspoilt.

Strangely, I'd recommend Malaga itself. A couple of its suburbs were once fishing villages, but still have nice beaches and fantastic seafood restaurants. Here's one holiday house I had my eye on:

I've been to Nerja and Estepona. Nerja is pretty with coves rather than a long stretch of beach. Estepona has a long beach and seems more a place that ex pats live than a holiday destination. Either would be fine.

I also like the stretch south of Granada. It's known as the Costa Tropical for its warm micro- climate. Salobrena is a nice little holiday town there.

thank you Puffling, have you ever stayed in pedregalejo or el palo? Looks interesting. Do you know what the beaches are like?

I haven't MrsMike, just fancied the idea having seen some reviews. I think the beaches are good but not golden sand.

we LOVE frigiliana- a white village just inland from nerja.

Estepona... San Pedro is lovely, also, nice beaches , still spanishy and relatively unspoilt, about an hour from malaga, and 20 minutes from marbella, although i like marbella old town, rather than puerto banus

some fab restaurants in san pedro, great for tapas and fish

mrsmike - pedregalejo or el palo are both great, lovely beaches and Malaga is generally much cheaper than the rest of the Costa Del Sol, partly because it's more Spanish and less touristy. Consequently, you won't find anywhere near so many people speaking English but not to the point where it is difficult if you're not a Spanish speaker.

I have to vote for nerja. or even benalmadena - there's alovely park there and a big marina. it's more interesting than estepona.

Estepona! It's lovely in the town and after 9pm all the Spanish come out to eat. The Carrafour is great, the beach is great, and Los Reales behind it is lovely to walk in.

Also can nip to Marbella (yuck) for shops.

I agree that Malaga itself is nice too.
