Switzerland in Summer. Self Catering Help Please

Hi,

DH and I usually go to France for a week in June. We've travelled all over France and stay in gites/airbnb-type places. We fancy going to the French speaking part of Switzerland this year but are having some problems finding somewhere to stay.

Normally we use Homeaway/airbnb etc. but there seems to be few self catering places near towns for summer holidays. Most accommodation is in ski resorts which will be closed in June or we would have to stay in a hotel which we don't want to do.

So I'd like to know from those who have been to Switzerland in the summer where we can stay. We want to go in June, have no children, will drive there from the UK, would like to be close to a town and self cater. Is there a website that I'm missing in my searches which has lots of accommodation on it? Do the Swiss not do self catering except for winter ski holidays? Is this summer holiday rental thing mostly a French thing?

Any help, greatly received. Thanks.

We’ve stayed in an apartment at Manor Farm campsite (close to the town of Unterseen).
We’ve also had a lovely time at Landal Vierwaldstättersee from where you can walk to Lake Lucerne but there wasn’t a town within walking distance.

I know you are asking about Switzerland but we have stayed in airbnb/homeaway self catering apartments in the Austrian Alps in summer. So it isnt just a french alps thing. We have only used these 2 websites.

There’s a law in Switzerland that prevents more than 20% of local housing stock being second homes. It is also quite difficult to buy a second home as a foreigner. There’s just much less supply and Swiss owners tend to actually use them year round at weekends and holidays.

Ski resorts are also very much open in the summer for walkers - June to September are actually quite busy and you’ll find most things open (including the chair lifts). The ski slopes, however, won’t be open for business 😂😂😂😂😂

We stayed in Montreux and found our self catering rental apartment on www.abritel.fr

Try interhome.

You could try a youth hostel. I've only stayed in the fancy one in Saas-Fee but you can probably self-cater in some.

Thank you all for your responses. I shall investigate further.

Have a look at the myswitzerland.com website. There are loads of apartments to rent on there. Mostly privately owned.

Don't be put off by something being a 'ski resort'. Generally they are well set up for summer visitors as well
