Would you holiday in Turkey?

Looking at a holiday for May and my DH is keen on Turkey and has found a nice resort in Fethiye. Would anyone have safety concerns traveling there? It will be us and a baby.

Why safety concerns? We booked for Fethiye a few years back, and had to cancel when I got pregnant. It looked lovely, If baby's old enough to travel, they should be fine, heat wise in May. Enjoy your trip.

DazedandConcerned · 31/01/2020 16:06

I wouldn't have any safety concerns, but I'm off to Egypt in May. Egypt was incredibly safe, safer than London frankly. I can't see Turkey being any different.

If you are a bit iffy on Turkey have a look at the Sunrise group of resorts in Hurghada. They have exceptionally high standards, tons of ala cartes and friendly, well trained staff. We usually stay at the Sunrise Royal Makadi which has a massive following on Facebook from the UK.

Just to give you an option if you'd feel safer in Egypt.

We went to Istanbul and Kusadasi a couple of years ago and Mamaris 20 years ago, no safety concerns other than you would usually take on holiday don't wear expensive stuff or flash wads of cash same as here really, just common sense.
I would take any meds for the baby with you as some times it can be difficult to get whilst on holiday.

drivingtofrance · 31/01/2020 16:42

No. It's on my list of places to avoid. Along with Egypt, Dubai, Gambia and some others.

From now on I'll be sticking to Europe and USA/Canada/Australia.

DazedandConcerned · 31/01/2020 16:43

I second the above about not being flash with cash. If you leave the resort keep a small bit of money in an external pocket (my husband uses the top pocket on his shirt) and pays from that. Do not get your wallet out. Ever. Let them think the small amount is all you have and just top it up as you spend it.

MozzchopsThirty · 31/01/2020 17:19

Nope, nor Tunisia, Egypt, Middle East, Morocco etc

There are plenty of safer destinations

ChizzleMeNizzle · 31/01/2020 17:25

We had a fabulous week in Fethiye last year, it's our happy place, we're going back in September.

dubiousdecision · 31/01/2020 17:34

Lara beach area in Turkey is beautiful and the people are lovely. It's far away from any major cities and feels v safe.

I would definitely go there before Egypt or Tunisia and wouldn't go to Dubai but for entirely different reasons !

blue25 · 31/01/2020 17:38

No, Turkey are about to bring in a law where if a man marries an underage girl he’s raped, he escapes punishment. The government there are eroding women’s rights and it’s scary.

dubiousdecision · 31/01/2020 17:39

Blue did not know that - if that's the case I wouldn't go for the same reasons I prefer not to spend my money in Dubai !

fuzzyduck1 · 31/01/2020 20:42

Yes it’s not an EU country.

Sunshine1239 · 31/01/2020 20:44

I wouldn’t go turkey or Egypt

Pipandmum · 31/01/2020 20:46

My son is going with his girlfriend in May with her mum and boyfriend. They go to the same resort every year. So I've no worries.

girlofthenorth · 31/01/2020 20:46

I wouldn't go on principal because of their human rights record! @blue25 that's one I hadn't heard of !

BeaLola · 15/02/2020 09:59

We have been for the last 4 yrs at May half term withDS and had a great time.

LEELULUMPKIN · 15/02/2020 10:46

Hell would have freeze over before I went there again.

HilaryBriss · 15/02/2020 20:23

I've been to Fethiye many times and will be going again in May, I love it and can't see any reason not to go.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/02/2020 21:51

Make sure you have good travel insurance - I went to Turkey and ended up in hospital, our total bill was £40 k.

Hospitals are excellent but I am so glad I was covered !

Egypt - dreadful place , I wouldn't go back under any circumstances

Witchofzog · 16/02/2020 14:01

I have recently and I would again. It's beautiful with mainly lovely hospitable people. Just take the same precautions as you would over here re money etc. Fethiye and Olu Deniz are both lovely too

anonacatchat · 16/02/2020 17:50

Yes :) booking there for May now

lamppost1 · 17/02/2020 08:36

We've booked for May :)

ElderAve · 17/02/2020 08:45

DH, ex forces, which may or may not be relevant but is definitely colouring his view, is point blank refusing to go anywhere where there is a Muslim population. Although he works on London and has many Muslim friends and colleagues in UK, so there's little logic in his position.

I expect there will be good bargains to be had in North Africa and Asia this summer because whilst DH may be daft, he won't be alone.

Trahira · 17/02/2020 09:21

We went last year (not far from Fethiye) and had a fab time.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 17/02/2020 13:25

Yes, we holiday there every year and we have just bought a house there. I actually lived out there for a few years when my daughter was a baby. There are no safety concerns within the tourist resorts.

It's a beautiful country and the people are lovely. It is very family friendly and they will do anything for babies and children.

I think most people who say they wouldn't go have never been and have preconceived ideas (normally completely wrong) about what it's like there. Most people who go return again and again.

Snuffkindle · 20/02/2020 14:05

No I wouldn't. I have been and I did absolutely love it. The beauty of the mountains and the sea was spectacular and I was in love with the Turkish food. I'd love to go back, but I feel uneasy about the current regime.
