Italian lake town near mountains

Can anyone recommend a two Centre north Italian hol... looking at flying to Milan hiring a car and having one week on a lake and one week in mountains... any recommendations of lovely locations , self catering and child friendly (pool on the wishlist!) tia

Stresa on Lake Maggiore is lovely. Lots of boat trips to the islands and a cable car. Plenty of restaurants in town and a couple of supermarkets. We stayed in a hotel, so can't advise on self catering.

We stayed near Lago di Ledro which was lovely, much quieter than the big Lakes and easy access to the mountains.
