Crazy prices for Ferry to France

ld2204 · 11/07/2019 17:05

We are looking at booking a ferry to France, either Plymouth the Roscoff or Poole to St Malo. But 'ouch' they are so expensive. Has anyone got a discount code please? Or any advice on how to do this cheaper, travelling to Brittany. We won't go the tunnel or day ferry to Calais ,(although I know it's cheaper!)

We were looking to book the same crossing but discovered it would cost the same to fly and hire a car which seems insane. So we are flying this year! Might be worth a look?

Brittany Ferries has a travel club that offers some discounts but need to renew every year so isn't worthwhile unless you travel regularly. Other than that it's just finding combinations and dates where the price drops, i.e. could be cheaper with an overnight stop. Other option is the extra hour to Portsmouth where there are more options of destinations and prices can be cheaper(also some more budget crossing with less facilities from there)

I have a discount code if anyone wants one

Those routes are the expensive routes. There are cheaper routes which involve less driving than going Dover to Calais, e.g Cherbourg, Caen, Le Havre.

We ended up getting the overnight ferry to Dieppe from Newhaven. Even including road tolls and petrol it was still half the price of Brittany ferries. Worth the sacrifice of a 3 hour drive for us. The timings meant we could leave after work on a Friday night and be at our destination by Saturday lunchtime having slept on the ferry

The trouble is Brittany Ferries pretty much have a monopoly. We wanted Portsmouth to Santander next Spring. The price is insane so we will be doing Portsmouth to Caen instead and making a bit of a holiday of the trip through France and Spain. Not cheap but works out better value.
For a couple we reckon it's usually cheaper to fly and hire a car if the holiday is less than a month. We often go for longer so that's when we take the ferry and drive down.
Am flying BA next week, wish me luck!

What sort of accommodation do you want? If you book a cottage and ferry as a package through Brittany Ferries it seems to work out much more reasonable.

fussychica · 09/09/2019 14:57

nipperlocko1 could I have the code please. TIA.

Look for packages where you book accommodation and ferry together, you'll get much better prices. Ferry on its own is v expensive.

i've always book portsmouth to st malo for august and having the club card with brittany ferries is well worth paying the price for it as you do get a good discount even though you do have to pay for the card each year it works out cheaper to pay for card and have the discount.
Summer prices with brittany ferries come out in oct

Brittany ferry summer 2020 crossings go live 16 October and I have a discount code if anyone would like to use it
