3 month trip with 4 year old twins - top tips?

DH and I have decided to take 3 months off at the beginning of next year before our 4 year old twin boys start school and do a long trip. Anyone done this? Where did you go and what would be your top tips? We fancy the idea of OZ and NZ but would also like to take them to Africa or SE Asia. Also I seem to remember vaguely reading about a journalist who did something similar and wrote a book about it - anyone got any idea what book I'm talking about? Can't find it on Amazon.

Many thanks

I have 4yo dts and would love to do something like this- my only fear is that they are still just a little young - 6 or 7 seems better, so they will actually, definitely remember it.
I take my hat off to you for bravery!

A great idea, but I think maybe too early for your kids to have lasting memories of it. Talking them out of school in the future for that length of time wouldn't be a problem, despite what threads on here might suggest.
However if you go ahead you would need more time to see Oz,NZ and any other places. Do you children cope well being out of routine? We have done a lot of travelling recently and ds who is 6 finds the frist few days of change very hard. I think the book you might be thinking of is "the grey Nomads guide book " by Cindy and Jeremy Gough.
My tips would be to plan carefully where you want to go and understand how long it is going to take to travel between places especially in OZ and NZ; to have an extremely plentiful supply of cash ; great friends at home to manage all the house things for you; fill some MP3 players with story cds and invest in a portable dvd player.
good luck.

Degags did a round the world trip a couple of years ago with a 4 yr old and a younger child (I think). She had a blog. I have not heard of her in ages, but she may still be around using a different name. If you search the archives you may find more about her.

The only thing I remember well was that they binned the idea of not having a pushchair for the 4yr old on the first day of the trip. And that it was important to make some time just for the children once a day every day (like taking them to a park for a good run).
