I have just discovered this train trip in Switzerland and think it would be a great surprise 40th gift for my DH birthday. He's had a really crap few years so I'd love to treat him. It looks so beautiful.

I've got two years to plan and save up (my pay is ok but will need time) so if you have been on it is it worth it?

What did you think? Did you do a few days? I'd appreciate any help or advice.

We haven’t done it as a single journey but have done chunks during different holidays in eastern Switzerland. I think it’s stunning. The views are amazing, the engineering is mind blowing (if that’s what you’re into) the geology I’d fab and the changes in climate and personality between Italy and Switzerland are sort of exciting and great.
I don’t know whether it’s possible to break your journey on the packages, but it would be worth finding out if you can as there are lovely places to see.
Bear in mind you need loads of spending money as the exchange rate is awful and spending a fiver on every cup of coffee if you’re watching the pennies can be excruciating.

I did it as a day trip from in Italy to somewhere in Switzerland - may have been St. Moritz. Absolutely beautiful scenery. We almost had a carriage to ourselves. Definitely worth doing.

There are a number of different routes by train in Switzerland, linking resorts with stopovers. Have a look at myswitzerland.com.

Ah, bloody exchange rate! I need to save for that too. Thank you for the help. I'm wondering whether to do a shorter trip then. Hmm.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely check out that website.

St Moritz would be lovely too.

Have you looked at what the man in seat 61 has to say about it?

Yes, it was great and well worth it. We did a day trip from Isio in Italy. In the summer the mountains still have snow, but the valleys are full of wild flowers. The train goes quite slow so you are able to take in the beautiful scenery.
St. Moritz is mega expensive, beautiful shops and restaurants. We looked on line and chose a restaurant for lunch. We factored the cost into our day trip, so there were no surprises.

Drove to Interlaken then did various train journeys up down across and through mountains.

I bloody love Switzerland.
