help me I'm a Mac thickie and I'm getting VERY annoyed!

Ok I'm trying copy a couple of dvd's and then burn them onto a blank dvd. I've followed the instructions and the mac says the burn is complete. However it cannot play the dvd back and says it is 'not supported' nor does the dvd player downstairs recognise it. I've wasted 4 discs and am now cross. Where am I going wrong? TIA

Hmm, I've got a mac and I've never come across this before.
