Has anyone done this? Experiences? Thinking New Orleans - Memphis (maybe stay in Jackson one night) Nashville - St Louis - Chicago.

Memphis to Nashville is about 3 hours, Nashville to St Louis is about 5 hours. Both very easy drives on interstates without having to drive through any other cities.
Nashville to Chicago is about 8 hours if you decide to miss out St Louis which I would recommend as I'm not a huge fan of St Louis!
Memphis and St Louis both have large 'no go' areas. In Memphis I would recommend staying in the Peabody Hotel downtown just for the experience or stay in the Germantown area to the east of the city which is very safe and still easy to access the city.
In St Louis, the nicest area I've stayed in is Creve Couer to the west of downtown but again, it's not too far out of the city.
The Nashville downtown area is much safer, I can recommend the Omni and the Westin hotels. If you want to stay further out, a new indoor water park (Sound Waves) has just opened at Opryland which also has a designer outlet mall and huge Gaylord hotel.

Thank you! It's odd but St Louis has been on my must see list for years, it was in a programme I think and I said I'd go, this is probably the only trip we'll do close to it and wouldn't fly to it alone so need to do it on this trip! But will probably only stay a couple of nights, will be staying longer in Nashville and Chicago. Thank you for the hotel recommendations, will be sure to research bad areas to stay away!

We did a brilliant road trip between the two cities a couple of years ago. We deliberately stayed off the interstate and followed Highway 61 (the old Blues route) as much as possible. So we did NOLA-Natchez-Vicksburg-Greenville-Clarkesdale (if you can do stay at the Shack Up Inn just outside Clarkesdale - it's a collection of old farm buildings and brilliant) and then Memphis. Then from Memphis we took a side trip to Nashville (to coincide with the eclipse) staying at Jacksonville on the way (plus a side side trip to see Nutbush, as in Nutbush City Limits). Then back to Memphis from where we got the overnight train to Chicago. It was by far the best holiday I have ever had - loads of live music, fabulous food and eccentric and wonderful people.

Aaargh - remembering it has made me want to do it all over again!

Oh that sounds amazing! I've been to Clarksdale many moons ago (assuming MS?) was hoping to go to Oxford, will look at the route you did.
