Thinking Bangkok and Koh Samui. Will we melt/ drown in rain?

I’ve done it, was very hot and wet but I coped once I got used to the humidity. I’ve also been in April when it was just hot.

peachypetite · 05/11/2018 14:39

I wouldn't go in August no.

TheGonnagle · 05/11/2018 14:41

Depends if you want to lounge in the sunshine all day gazing at blue seas. If yes, probably best choose another time. We’ve been three Julys in a row, I don’t mind the greyer skies and it’s quieter and the prices are keener. But August can be a total washout. Vietnam could be good then, or Bali.

Thanks all - peachypetite care to elaborate?

Koh Samui wet season doesn't start till October...so would be ok ( if rather humid...but as it's a tropical island , to be expected - occasionally an afternoon downpour but soon dries up
We've been in July and end August into September and had brilliant weather both times ...went to Koh Phangan this year as well and actually preferred it to Koh Samui

KingkillerKvothe · 05/11/2018 20:55

I went middle of August to middle of September and the rain was immense. But it was also hot. To be honest, the storms were welcome and amazing to look at on the beach. Bangkok was horrendous though. Couldn't breath for humidity.

mnahmnah · 05/11/2018 20:57

I went to both in August. Very hot, sticky, humid. A couple of big downpours. Grey skies generally, not a lot of bright sunshine. Still had a great time!

Icedgemandjelly · 05/11/2018 20:58

I went to koh samui in August and it was great. No good on phuket side. I went to koh samui again in Feb and very bad storm for a week.... so you just can't tell

Oct definitely avoid

I think Koh Samui is a good choice in August - I believe it’s their dry season. I went in August, and we had lovely weather - I don’t remember any rain at all, although it was 20 years ago! We had four days in Bangkok as well, and it only rained once, although it was very humid.

nessus · 06/11/2018 20:01

I thought the weather was gorgeous in August and we were there for the whole month. The heavens opened once I think whilst we were in Bangkok, a little up north and no rain at all down south when we were in Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.

Wimbledonwomble · 11/11/2018 13:45

Watching with interest as we're thinking of doing similar. I actually thought August was supposed to be a good time to visit Koh Samui unlike most other places in Thailand?? Instead of Bangkok, thought about Chang Mai/Rai instead. Any views on that?

Also wondered about Borneo as I believe that's a good place to go in August too?

spreadingchestnuttree · 23/11/2018 23:38

I've done Bangkok and Koh Samui in August. It was fine. East coast is drier than west coast at that time of year, and any rain tends to fall in short downpours so most of the day is fine. I'd happily go again in August.

Sortingfinances · 24/11/2018 17:16

@Wimbledonwomble - we were in Borneo last August and it was great. Weather hot. Days dry except 1. Storms most nights. I just put a long post on 'loved Borneo where next?'.
