Athens - 2 or 3 days with kids?

We are going to Athens during the Easter hols next year and then we’re planning to head to Crete.

Just wondering if two days will be enough to see the main sights before we head off or whether a third day would be good? We’ll have DTs with us who be 6, not far off 7 by then.

Any tips on things to do also appreciated!

We did a lot of walking around with history loving DC. 2 full days would do it imo. we did a 2 hour walking tour which was really interesting and the person doing the talk pitched it at the right level for the family.

Thanks Mummymeister. Sounds like two will do the trick.

We are going in December for 3 full days with a 13 and 15 year old - we've got a kick start guide to Athens tour on first half day, first full day mythology tour which takes in all the main sights and then will do the limba rage rooms or VR experience. Second day Segway, acropolis museum and a food tour. Third day planetarium and warship at flisvos marina and then funicular up lykavittois hill and a meal at the top

Wow, l8toys, that all sounds amazing!!

Would you mind telling me which mythology tour you have booked?

It's not a very attractive city but the historical bits (that are left) and food are fab - personally I'd try and fit it all in 2 days on the basis I'd rather have that extra day in Crete!

SpoonBlender · 02/10/2018 11:40

Same as SJane - bang through Athens' good bits quickly, then get over to Crete to relax! Or do long gorge walks, mmm Samaria is so pretty. I much prefer Crete.

I would say 2 was enough in Athens

We had two full days in Athens in Oct 2016 with our two DC and that was plenty IMO. We had a day doing the Acropolis + museum (both great and DH and I loved them, but depends on age and interests of DC as to whether Ancient Greece will excite them), and our second day we did Monastiraki, the Agora, Roman Forum, etc. Modern Athens was fairly grotty and the area around Syntagma Square was full of rough looking people - I walked up there one afternoon on my own and didn't linger. The ruins are amazing and unique and well worth a visit - the rest I wouldn't spend extra time there to visit.

As others have said, the historical sites are worthy of a visit but otherwise it's pretty awful. I really didn't like it. Have travelled quite a bit and actually felt unsafe in Athens. See what's on your bucket list and head elsewhere - quickly!
