Transit passengers in Hong Kong airport

Hi, we will be stopping off in HK for a couple of hours en route from UK to Sydney. I’m planning to take empty water bottles to fill once we clear security in the UK ... what will happen in HK? Will the water need to be emptied on the plane/in the terminal? Not sure if we will have to go through security again in HK. I’d rather take “proper” bottles that we can refill however don’t want to risk them being taken off us, so wondering if it’s better to just buy disposable bottles of water at each airport? We’re flying with Cathay Pacific if that makes any difference. Thanks.

You will need to go through security again. The bottles just need to be empty before you go through so just either empty them on the plane before you get off or in the toilets before security.

Not sure about HK but you def have to go through security again in Singapore and can’t take water bottles. So I think plan for security and empty the bottles. In Singapore the security is as you go into the gate area.

Hopefully someone will know for HK for sure. I’d be interested to know as will be doing both routes in a couple of months,

Thanks both ... so if we take proper reusable bottles, we should be fine keeping them as long as we have emptied them before going through security again in HK? That’s what I was hoping Smile (and hopefully there are water fountains of some sort in HK so we can refill them!)

Water bottles only need to be empty at the moment you go through security. You can empty them moments before and fill them immediately afterwards. You can take any empty container you want through security.

You will need to go through security again but you can take an empty bottle through. Their security checks are far quicker and more efficiently managed than at many other airports I have used.

HK is truly vast (and you can certainly walk miles there) so do allow plenty of time to get to the next gate (it also has plenty of shops and restaurants).

Their airport website is second to none with useful info on it. Their links from that site may also be helpful to you:-

Thank you so much Flowers

Attila those links are really helpful -I didn’t even think about checking the airport website Blush We’re not going until next August but I’m really anxious about flying so trying to be organised and plan this stuff now to take my mind off how nervous I am about being in the air for that long.

Plenty of places at HK airport to fill up empty water bottles. Ime the airport is easy to navigate ( I transit through HK frequently as I live in mainland China) and security pretty efficient.
