Passport office are no longer adding remaining period to renewed passports. I found out today the hard way.

I read that too. Very sneaky of them to change the rules with no warning

Wow, thanks for the heads up.

Apparently it's because of Brexit. EU rules state non members are not permitted if passports exceed 10 years. No idea why kids 5 year passports are affected.
Bloody Brexit...

That's just ridiculous.

I got my DSs renewed in June as we were travelling in August and needed 6 months on the passport to enter that country. The passport was not expiring until December.

So glad I did it then as the extra time was added on so doesn't expire until December 2023.

That means if the new rules applied I would have lost 6 months on his passport. Sounds like a money making scheme.

Yes I think so. Also to stop people renewing early to get the EU burgundy ones rather than the blue Brexit ones, I guess.

Mine expires next December so if we can go away in June flight I might have to renew then and lose 6 months which is really annoying, I had planned to renew in March. DS' passport expires in June, so we'll need a new one for him anyway.

ajandjjmum · 25/09/2018 13:41

So basically we will all be paying for a 9.5 year passport, as many places want 6 mths. remaining when you visit.

DunesOfSand · 25/09/2018 13:47

Yep.....
That said, DH got some very funny looks, and a lot of investigation of his passport when he had the audacity to fly on a passport wirh a validity of 10 and a half years.

I'm guessing it's max 1 extra passport over your lifetime tho.

fuzzyduck1 · 06/10/2018 16:10

What happens to passports in other countries? USA? oz? Do they have the extra time added on?
I’ve traveled all over the place never had any problems if passport valid for 10.5 years.

Don’t worry we won’t be allowed in Europe after brexit anyway. That is unless they want liberating again from an evil dictator again then we won’t need passports as there sure as hell won’t be any French on the beaches to check them

[Hmm]
