Berlin - places to eat

We're going to visit Berlin in November and I've seen a few threads on places of interest but not really where is good to eat out.

It's an anniversary trip so we'd especially like advice on where to go for our anniversary dinner. It doesn't need to be posh, just really good food is fine by us.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Berlin is known for street food: Currywurst and döner kebab (usually better than any I've eaten in the UK).

More restauranty but less German:

La Tia Rica (Chilean)

Der Hahn ist tot (French)

Pretty much any Vietnamese place (have not ever been disappointed with one in Germany)

We enjoyed eating at Van Loon, which is a seafood restaurant on a ship on the Landwehr Canal.

I also love the beer garden near the Rosa Luxemburg in Tiergarten, but probably not in November...

Oh and there's a good revolving restaurant in the TV tower (Fernsehturm) - it has an English verson of its website iirc. Lovely and romantic at night with the city lights. I had an anniversary dinner there with my DP too. They also do a lovely all inclusive posh brunch with heaps of buffet food and cream cakes. Quite expensive (30 euros pp iirc) but worth it with the view.

Cookies Cream is vegetarian and really interesting.
It's hidden in a loading bay and you have to ring the door bell.

Neni at hotel bikini is nice the bar in there is good too ( monkey bar)
As said above Berlin does fantastic street food, burgermeister was once a public toilet, the burger I had was excellent. Surroundings not so much!

A second vote for Cookies Cream. Amazing!

Lavanderia is very good lavanderiavecchia.wordpress.com/ and would also recommend www.saltnbone.de/ - those Scotch eggs are as delicious as they look.

Brilliant! Thank you!!

I'll have a look at all of those, we're there for 4/5 nights so could try quite a few of them. Cookies and Cream sounds like the magic pie shop we had in my Uni town! I've never had Vietnamese food so that sounds interesting. We went to Zurich one year and it was freezing but beautiful so we'll probably still try the beer garden.

I'll update you in a couple of months on how we got on.

Enjoy your trip! I meant to say that the beer garden is near the Rosa Luxemburg Memorial - it comes up on Google Maps as Café am Neuen See.

If you are there over the weekend, then don’t miss out on Sunday brunch. It’s a Berlin thing - lots of cafés will do a fixed price eat-all-you-want buffet in the morning. The best one we found (somewhere near Boxhagenerplatz, IIRC) had, among other things, massive bowls of batter and three waffle irons going on a self-service counter, with piles of whipped cream and fruit to load them up with.

I can't recommend anywhere posh, but Momos is lovely for v casual.

Cafe Josty in the Sony Center is very nice. We ate there twice when we went to Berlin.

There are a few restaurants around Hackescher Markt (Near the tower, dungeon, aquarium). Particularly a really good Italian, a Spanish and a couple of Steakhouses, also a Vietnamese I seem to remember. The area seemed very popular with lots of shops too. It was the end of one of the tram lines and has a main line railway station.

If the places mentioned so far, Cookies Cream is the one that would have a native Berliner murmuring 'good choice'. Haven't been myself though so can't confirm if the great rep is based on good food or it just being achingly cool.

If you want something of a secret tip that's quite, erm, unusual, there's the Place I cannot spell, but it's the Tjakischische Teestube, in a back courtyard off Oranienburger Str. You sit on a carpet on the floor and drink vodka. Great fun.
