Oversized luggage - Virgin Australia internal flight

We are going on a trip to Australia leaving from UK where our luggage is well within the sizes allowed. We have one flight from Sydney to Cairns and the luggage sizes allowed are much smaller! I've checked the Virgin Australia website and it says:

"Oversized baggage can be checked in, provided each item does not exceed their baggage weight allowance; otherwise they will be charged with an overweight baggage fee."

Does this mean that even though the bags are bigger than allowed and so long as they are underweight (which they will be) then we won't have to pay for excess baggage? I can't see anywhere on the Virgin website to ask.

There is information on the website about paying for excess baggage but this bit is a bit ambiguous and I don't really want to be hit with the airport excess fees it I can help it!

How much are you over? We have just done some internal flights in Aus, and it's all pretty blaze (I handed over the wrong boarding cards for one flight, and we still got checked in, no comment made).

The webpage I saw said that you needed to contact them before flying if you had oversized baggage? I'd read it as no charge, but maybe need to be bag dropped at oversized, rather than straight forward check-in.
We didn't fly virgin tho.

It says the overall size can be 140cm which is the measurement of length+width+depth. Our cases measure 161cm. So an extra 21cm overall. I just don't want to chance it and end up with having to pay an extra £100 or whatever. I can't even see anywhere to pay if the bags are oversized. I can only see for extra bags.

BA/Cathay are giving us 203cm overall and they fit within that no problem.

Just realised that our bloody hand luggage is also bigger than allowed on the internal flights.

Ridiculous. Trying not to swear too much now!

My dd is flying to Aus with Cathay and has an internal flight with Virgin Australia. We ended up buying her new luggage!

That's the thing though, we bought brand new luggage to go. Cost a small fortune! Fits all other airlines flying from UK to just about anywhere but just not Virgin Australia internal flights!
