Where to stay inLa Rochelle or Il de Re?

We have no idea why we have chosen this area but really fancy it!

2 adults and 2 kids on the beach or by the pool but ideally would have the best of both worlds. Nice inexpensive hotel (4* ??) but would generally eat out for lunch and dinner.

Would love some recommendations as we have no idea where to start!!. I'm assuming that il de re is more expensive so I don't mind going there for a day trip if it's too ££££ to stay!

Thanks in advance.

There aren't very many hotels on the coast in that region, especially family friendly ones. It's mainly all self catered holiday parks with onsite restaurants.

I did this a few years ago and found a private home rental, about 2 minutes walk from the beach and or had a private pool. The home we rented had bicycles we could use. This area is very friendly for cycling and we self catered in the home. Fresh bread every morning from the local bakery. As PP said, there aren't many hotels. Our boy was about 1.5 years old at the time.

There are plenty of hotel s in La Rochelle but inexpensive ones don't have a pool and the beach in la Rochelle isn't great ( it's a port) The town is lovely though. Il de Re is £££ unless you camp/caravan. You could try a bit up or down the coast. La Chatelaillon Plage or La Tranche sur Mer. If you want a pool your best bet is to head inland. Around Fontenay le Comte is nice.

This was 11 years ago but I don't suppose it has changed radically. We rented a house in Ars-en-Re, hired bikes and a trailer for toddler.
It was around May half term but I think it must have been term time in France. French holidayers were mainly couples who didn't really appreciate our well behaved kids in restaurants at dinner.

We had a lovely holiday but I think I would stay at St Martin if I went with kids again. It was busier in a good way.

We spent a night in La Rochelle, went to the aquarium and had dinner on the harbour. We stayed in a travel lodge type hotel where the room had a tiny kitchen. The kitchen in the hotel room turned out to be the highlight of the holiday for the kids Confused

Thanks so much. We’ve been looking at the map and might investigate going further south. We’re flying and hiring a car so could look a bit further afield.
