Amsterdam - where to stay

Hi, I'm going to Duinrell with my husband and two children in June and we've decided to stay overnight in Amsterdam. We need just one night but it's proving impossible to find a family room that isn't extortionate. Can anyone recommend any nearby areas that have easy access into the centre that might be a bit cheaper? Thanks.

Stay in the Hague and go in by train for the day?

We found Amsterdam accommodation v difficult and were only looking for 2 adults. On our holiday we then went to the Hague and realised it was minutes away by train, far nicer and got you straight into the centre.

If we ever went again, we'd never stay in Amsterdam, we'd just commute daily. Not least Amsterdam was vile for my asthma.

Stayokay Vondelpark is a youth hostel which welcomes families. They have a six-person family room with a double bed, and a few quadruple bunk bed rooms. It's alright for just one night. it's clean and wasn't at all noisy when we went. The location is brilliant for families. The Vondelpark is huge and has some of the best play areas in the city. The amazing KinderKookKafe is nearby. Kinderkookkafé is a family restaurant that is run entirely by children: they cook, serve, bring the bill and wash up, all with a little help from adults. Parents leave their children in the afternoon and when they come back, they try what the children have prepared. While the children are there, they are taught how to cook and serve food. The food is simple, the prices are affordable and they cater for English speakers.

Hi. I'm an Amsterdam blogger and have written a post that should definitely help! Have a read and let me know if I can give you a hand with anything specific. Bear in mind that the city centre is tiny so hotel rooms are at a premium. Stay a little further out and tram in to the centre in minutes.

Loads of family ideas for things to do and places to eat on the blog as well

We stayed in Haarlem, which is lovely and has frequent trains into Amsterdam Central Station (ten minute journey time). Its still £££s but not as bad as Amsterdam itself. If you're willing to go a little further out (say twenty to thirty minutes by train) a lot of other places open up.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I think we're going to stay in Haarlem so thank you for that recommendation, it looks perfect for what we need.
