At the end of May we are off to Bergen for 3 nights with 7, 13 and 16 year old girls. Can anyone offer advice on whether to hire a car or not, get a Bergen card, a short fjord cruise etc... i hear there is an amazing train journey from here also to enjoy the mountains, any help with ideas please!!!

The "Norway in a Nutshell" day tour is a must! Mountains, boat trip on fjord, waterfalls, scenic railway - the lot in one package. You can buy tickets at Bergen railway station once you get there.

The Norway in a nutshell® tour from Bergen:
www.norwaynutshell.com/original-norway-in-a-nutshell/bergen/

Starting from Bergen you first set out on a scenic train journey to Voss on the Bergen Railway (09:00 ish start, 1 hour).

From Voss you travel by bus through charming villages and scenic nature landscapes, towards Gudvangen. From May-September the bus travels down the steep hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva (1 hour approx).

The bus will arrive in Gudvangen, where you continue the tour by taking a fjord cruise on the on the narrow Nærøyfjord and the magnificent Aurlandsfjord. The Aurlandsfjord is a picturesque fjord that offers stunning views, while the Nærøyfjord is a dramatic fjord surrounded by high mountains. Nærøyfjorden is one of the most narrow fjords in Europe and included on UNESCO's World Heritage List (approx 90 minutes).

After your fjord cruise you arrive in the small village of Flåm, nestled in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord. 90 mins or so break for lunch (not part of the tour price).

Tour continues by taking the legendary Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway offers spectacular panoramic views to some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape (45 mins).
The Flåm Railway will arrive in Myrdal, where you change trains to the Bergen Railway. You travel back to Bergen on round trips (2 hours).

It was a number of years ago, but I think we got back to Bergen by 6 o'clock, giving us time to get cleaned up and go out for dinner by about 8.
