Disaster. We booked in January to go with the 3 dcs to Canada. Didn't know we needed an eTA until 3 weeks ago. Applied, ours all approved, dh has an assault charge- from defending himself after our loony neighbour came at him with a garden spade (and hit dh on the head) then called the police after dh managed to fight him off and enough to put the guy off. So the assault charge is apparently a charge which in Canada would carry imprisonment of up to ten years so it's been refused.
I've applied again and put a little explanation of the story in with it but who knows if it will make a difference. We should have just lied on the application form and answered "have you ever been arrested and charged?" With "no" but hey ho too late now here's what you get for being honest.
Harumph.

I hate to break it to you but I think it will stillbe refused!
My husband also has a minor charge and was refused an eta 2 years ago.
We recently spoke to someone about it and was advised that after 10 yrs it is spent in Canada and he is more likely to be accepted. Have applied again but need to provide lots of supporting documents.
I am a Canadian citizen and so is our DS so find it very hard, all we want to do is go visit my family, spend Christmas with my mum and dad etc.
Good luck
