Jordan is lovely. You need a good two days for Petra, it's hard to see it all in one day. Not much of note in Amman. Jerash was quite nice but perhaps not so exciting for kids. Bedouin camping in the desert was amazing. You could also add a day or two in one of the dead sea resort hotels. The main issue is how to get around I suppose. I went as a single woman and I had a driver who took me from place to place but I had plenty money in those days. Probably best to go on an escorted tour style trip.

We hired a car and the driving was fine. The Bedouin camp was amazing.

We did- 2 nights Amman (arrived v late first day though)
1day Jerash then drove to Petra, stopped at mosaics on the way.
1full day Petra (was enough as it was really hot!)
1 day drive to Bedouin camp, desert safari and overnight
Drove to Red Sea and 2 nights there

Were planning on Dead Sea on the way home but it was too hot to get out of the car.

I absolutely loved it. Would be totally fine with kids. Only thing I wouldn't recommend was going in August!
