Short term apartment rentals of 30 days or less are still illegal throughout NYC's five boroughs. Such sites also never check the veracity of such listings so if anything does go wrong, you are on your own. NYC apartments generally are very small.

You will need to stay in a hotel or a suites based hotel instead; have a look at chains like Embassy Suites, Novotel, Homewood suites etc in the midtown area.

NYC around Christmas time can be very crowded (its one of their peak seasons) as well as extremely cold; their weather the last few weeks has seen daytime temperatures of minus 10 to minus 15. Its not great to walk around in for any length of time.

For what it's worth - we stayed with 2 DCs at the Doubletree on Times Sq. We had a bedroom and a double sofa bed in the living room and a small kitchenette - and bathroom obvs...
It wasn't cheap but we were lucky and had an amazing view over Times Sq (and because we were high up there was no issue with noise).

I've just got back from staying at the hotel @viktoria mentioned and can also vouch for it. It was really lovely and so handy to be staying centrally especially if it's a short trip you're going on. Also, eating meals out in New York doesn't have to be super expensive if you know where to look.

I have also stayed in this hotel and can recommend.

We stayed in an airbnb in Williamsburg last October with our teens. Went like clockwork. Subway 2 minutes away. Can pm you the details.

Not used them yet but have these bookmarked for future, they have 2 bedroom appartments.

I stayed in an air b&b in ny. The owner asked us to arrive under the cover of darkness, and if any of the residents asked who we were to say we were "John's friends".

Apparently air b&bs are being busted left, right and centre and as a customer you have no comeback as the rules are pretty clear. We were told that there was the possibility of having to leave on the spot!
