Family holiday ideas..

We want to go away this summer, me, husband and 2 kids, will be 1 and 3.

Pre-kids we normally go on a bit more adventurous holidays - sailing, back packing etc. or away in a big villa with the family so not really done a normal holiday as a family.

Where would be good to go?

  • outside summer holidays
  • good weather but not too hot
  • not too commercial / busy / touristy
  • lots of things to do for the kids
  • nice family friendly places to eat
  • would probably want to hire a car to get out and about
  • would need bigger than just a hotel room as like to relax / have a drink when kids have gone to bed
  • no set budget but rather not spend a fortune but also want to stay somewhere quite nice.

Ideas?

Camping is fantastic with young kids - you can sit out on deck in evening with a drink and keep door open to listen out! Tamarit park in Spain is great - beautiful private beach, kids pool, close to lots of small Spanish towns (plus larger like Barcelona), and perfect weather may/June.

We usually do Airbnb now as it's nice to have own bedrooms. Our kids are the same age and the places we've really enjoyed taking them to are; Innsbruck, Verona, Sweden, Sicily, Montenegro and France. Italy is particularly good for kids; good weather, nice food, lots to see and do. Plus they have agriturismos, farm stays with a pool, animals and a restaurant. Our kids loved the one in Sicily which had its own access to the beach through an orange grove. We did a lot of backpacking pre kids and found this not too much of a compromise.
