Lanzarote, much nicer than Tenerife IMHO. There are 3 main resorts the largest and most lively is Puerto Del Carmen, but not a 18-30 type of resorts, more restaurants and bars etc, new town, near casino is quite flat, as is Matagorda, old town can be hilly in parts, something to consider if you have a buggy.

Playa Blanca is slightly more upmarket with a marina, lots of self catering accommodation.

Costa Teguise is a mix of the two. It depends what sort of holiday you are looking for, if you are wanting AI probably CT. For villa/self catering PB or PDC. Loads of reasonable restaurants and bars to chose from.

Lanzarote is quite a small island, hire a car and you can easily get to the tourist spots. The bus service is good to. PDC is 10mins from Arrecife airport, CT around 20mins and PB 35 mins by car.

Lanzarote is full of interesting sights, volcanoes, beaches, caves, zoo, César Manriques’ houses and designs, wine region. The natural beauty of Lanzarote is fab.

The island is full of low rise accommodation, the only high rise hotel is the The Arrecife Grand. I am a Lanzarote fan, can you tell OP, our favourite resort is PDC btw.

Thank you Yogagirl! We would be looking at self-catering. Can I ask what you didn't like about Tenerife? My worry about Lanzarote is that it looks a little small and we normally like to vary the stuff we do, i.e. not go to the beach every day so I thought perhaps Tenerife would offer more choices?

Lanzarote has loads to do . It's really family friendly and absolutely beautiful. No high rise buildings etc . It's done it's best to keep to its original canary island look due to a prominent politician/ artist when tourist trade was starting to boom. Loads of lovely restaurants, water parks , a zoo which holds rescued animals , boat trips, and loads of other day trips to markets/ volcanoes etc.
I go every January and sometimes more if I can.

With kids? Tenerife. Hands down. There’s far more to do with the kids there.

Xoticdreamz · 05/12/2017 16:49

Ha ha , almost the exact same post yoga!
Big huge fan here as well . I think I have been 7 times so far and have still not done everything I want to do.

North tenerife is lovely. I liked Lanzarote too but went to tenerife with kids in November and it was great. Loro parque, botanic gardens. South has a very different feel. Lanzarote I felt was better without toddler. Geology, vin yards and architecture

Thanks everyone.
Are the beaches equally nice?
Which of the islands get busier?

We have stayed in Tenerife a couple of times, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, forgive spellings! Hotels were nice, but huge, very high rise, bothered by sellers on the beach and in restaurants, and timeshare touts etc. Never had that in Lanzarote. Lanzarote feels more laid back.

RavingRoo · 05/12/2017 18:20

The beaches are probably nicer in Tenerife for me - long sandy stretches. Plenty of sunbed type places that do kids activities. Etc. Both islands were equally busy this year, but Tenerife is busier with young families.

whoareyou123 · 05/12/2017 18:25

I would say Tenerife purely because of Siam Park (claimed to be largest waterpark in Europe) and Loro Parque (worlds largest indoor penguin exhibition, one of the few places in Europe with orcas, etc).

CottonSock · 06/12/2017 10:01

Beaches nice south Tenerife, not north. Lanzarote a bit mixed

minipie · 06/12/2017 10:10

Agree with pp, Tenerife with toddler, Lanzarote without.

Southern tenerife is warmer and sunnier than other parts of the canaries. and Loro Parque is amazing.

Lanzarote has lots of interest but for older kids and adults not toddlers I'd say. Unless you plan to go somewhere like Princesa Yaiza and just stay in the resort.

On Tenerife I would suggest staying in the Playa del Duque area (south west tip of tenerife), it doesn't have the mcdonalds/disco strips that you find further east.
