So DH has a special birthday coming up so I thought it would be nice for us and DD to go away for a long weekend.

Any recommendations?
Anyone know what Rome is like this time of year?

Personally I would go somewhere like the Cotswolds or Scottish Borders, fancy hotel, log fires, good food and wine. Days spent wrapped up warm pottering around local towns.

Sorry I realised you said your DD is coming, that may not be ideal depending on her age.

I went to Ljubljana in January, it was lovely and winterey and I sat outside lots of heated cafes having mulled wine and/or venison goulash. It was great.

Venice is much less crowded in the colder months - lots of art galleries, museums and cafes

Interested to see what people suggest as we're also contemplating a short break for a birthday then. I got sidetracked looking at lovely holidays dog-sledding to see the Northern Lights, but way beyond our budget!

Vienna and Berlin could be snowy then but both cities have a huge amount to do that everyone in the family would enjoy.
In Vienna, for example, you could visit the schonbrunn palace for the excellent maze and strudel making demonstrations, the Imperial Butterfly House, choose from a wide range of gentle or adrenaline-pumping rides in the Prater park, watch the horses train at the Spanish Riding School, tour (and taste samples) at the schnapps museum, etc...
Barcelona will be a little warmer and again, there is loads to keep you all satisfied. Marrakesh will be pleasant at that time of year too, but not quite so family friendly.

Prague is beautiful anytime of year. I've been to Talin and Riga in winter would recommend.
