Travelling to NYC

I am thinking of going to NYC for Xmas or New Year. It will be for a week or a little bit less. I have kids aged 12, 9 and 5. Does anyone have any experience of doing this flight and if so what is the best flight time so the kids aren't ruined for the whole holiday? Is it best to fly over night or through the day?

Flights to the US from the UK more often that not leave during daylight hours (because you gain time travelling to the US).

Flights returning from the US to the UK leave overnight arriving into the UK early the following day.

Where are you thinking of staying; its a popular time of year to be visiting NYC as well.

We usually fly Virgin on that route. Flights leave throughout the day and our children have always dealt well with time differences. It's the return flight that's usually the red eye one.

It's not actually that long a flight really, and we always found that there's plenty on the onboard entertainment system to keep kids occupied, plus they're well fed throughout too.

Not with kids but done that route a lot and find that if you get a morning flight you're not too knackered when you get there.

Most flights come back overnight and you're buggered when you get back regardless. It's a short night with not enough time for decent sleep.
