Hi
I'm taking my son away for a week in October.
I'd love a week in the sun, but he's like something more exciting.
Any ideas ? Budget is important .. but want something other than Tenerife ..
Anyone got any inspired ideas ??

Thanks

Hi Chh03, I guess it really depends what he is interested in. And you!

I have taken my now 14 year old on several mini breaks to cities (Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Seville) over the last couple of years, either in May or October half terms. We usually have a trade off - fun activity for a museum.... Paris we did Disneyland & up the Eiffel Tower so he had to come to a couple of museums. Lisbon we did a tour of the football stadium for a museum. Berlin we went up the tv tower and went to the chocolate Ritter shop where you can make your own and then museums & a boat trip on the river. Lots of pool/beach activity thrown in, and plenty of interesting food & ice creams! This summer we went to Croatia - lots of water based activities.

Can you go somewhere warm like Crete/Cyprus/Turkey? Not sure if the Mark Warner places are still open in October half term - they have heaps of stuff for teens which means you can relax in the sun by the pool!

Good luck !

Neilson holidays are brilliant. You can do as much or as little as you want.

October sun is going to be hard to come by if you don't want to go to the Canaries or long haul.
I would suggest a road trip to the Alps. Munich - Berchtesgaden - Salzburg, 2nts each.

Does it have to be short haul? We are doing 5 days in New York for the same price as it would have been to go somewhere like Venice. Norwegian Airways flights less than £200 return then book a cheap and cheerful hotel it is possible in Manhattan but even cheaper if you stay in Brooklyn and travel by subway.

This October we are flying into Naples and will spend 5 nights exploring Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri then on to Rome for a couple of nights. Hope that weather will be pleasant if not scorching and good for sightseeing.

DS is 11 and has been unimpressed by recent holidays to Tenerife (which we used to love) and currentlyCornwall- gorgeous cottage with beach view but rubbish wifi. Fingers crossed Italy works out ok.

Malta and/or Gozo? Could stil be reasonably hot at that time of year, although not guaranteed.

What does he mean by exciting? Lots of watersports? At 14 he is old enough to learn to scuba dive, or could probably do other water sports so you can do things together and then you also get to lounge in the sun while he goes off getting wet.

Valetta is an interesting city to walk round. Eating out is relatively affordable well it was before the exchange rate crashed again and getting there/hotels etc also reasonable.

frenchfancy · 25/08/2017 16:39

rookiemere we might see you there. We are going to Naples for a week. We've been before for 3 days and are returning at the request of Dds (16 &11) . Can't wait.

rookiemere · 25/08/2017 21:33

Excellent news French fancy. What did your DSs enjoy so much about it ? We'll be there 14-19 October

Chh03 · 25/08/2017 23:13

Thanks everyone for your replies... I guess I just wanted some ideas as no NP to bounce things off
I loved the idea of NY, my son less so.
Currently looking at Greece and the islands

I've been to Ibiza end October a few times. Still wonderfully warm.

frenchfancy · 26/08/2017 07:36

@rookimere Pompeii was a big hit. But also just Naples itself. The vibrancy of it. Oh and the pizza 😃. We are going at the end of the month so we won't bumb into you.

innagazing · 26/08/2017 23:52

I'd be very careful about the Greek Islands in mid October. In my experience the weather changes at the end of September and there's bugger all to do on the Islands if it's not sunny and warm.

Ollycat · 27/08/2017 19:11

I'm going to Venice with my 12 and 14 year old.

Chh03 · 03/09/2017 15:45

Hi
Well I think I've made a decision.. Paphos, hopefully relatively warm and places to visit.
I think to do long haul as New York seriously appealed I needed to book flights well in advance.
Thanks for all the ideas
And back to school tomorrow but least hopefully with a lovely holiday to look first too !

I was going to suggest Cyprus. We went last Oct and are going again this year. The weather was beautiful - 28 degrees every day - and we swam and went to the beach. Southern or Eastern Med is fine in Oct.
