Going there this summer. Starting to do my research about what to do/ see / where to go. Any views or suggestions gratefully received.

Herceg Novi

Monasteries - lots of them but especially Ostrog

Just lots of mountains - high ones!

Get up early and walk the city walls at Kotor, amazing views. Drive to the Lusitica peninsula and find a secluded swimming spot. Avoid Budva, it's quite over developed and touristy. Perast and Risan are two very beautiful towns on the edge of Kotor bay with Venetian style architecture and some lovely churches and mosaics.

Some good tips on here, to add, if you like a glimpse at into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, Porto Montenegro is worth a visit, if not just to see the sheer scale of the super yachts moored there, and the shops and bars are very nice too, very glam.

The walking. We walked from Kotor to Vispasar over a week - very beautiful and unspoilt. If you only walk up The Ladder behind Kotor it's a standout.

toucanplaythatgame2 · 26/07/2017 23:17

Oh wow we went in June it's amazing. Kotor obviously.

There is a restaurant called vierge65 with beautiful views (find it on TripAdvisor) worth a stop for lunch.

Persist, when the cruise ship passengers have left.

Casa del mare amfora hotel - if you can stay there then stop for lunch or a coffee- stunning views.

Flights into tivat are convenient for kotor (10 mins) - Dubrovnik is 1.5 hours away

A drink at sunset in dobrota

Enjoy!

toucanplaythatgame2 · 26/07/2017 23:18

Perast- not persist!! Grin

Herceg novi is really hilly but nice day trip. If it's your first time base yourself in kotor and drive out from there. Lots of places to see from there.

Get a hotel with a view over the bay. The old town has nice hotels but no views.

We Airbnb'ed it.

The kotor end of dobrota looked like a good spot to stay.

From Kotor drive up the ladder (windy road) and at the top there is a humongous zip wire across the canyon - totally unforgettable and amazing.
Further on (sorry I've forgotten the name) there is a rope climbing go ape type place that is also brilliant and we loved speedboat trips from Kotor around the bay (have taken a few, the smaller the boat the better)

Thethingswedoforlove · 04/08/2017 19:52

Wow thanks user

Also, really worth an hours drive or so to lake Skadar and taking a boat called the Golden Frog. - an entire's day trip - swimming, fab lunch, a little history, more swimming. The girl running it speaks immaculate English - we did it twice

user1494670108 · 04/08/2017 21:30

You can find her on Trip advisor! (Golden Frog - Ivan's)

crazycatguy · 04/08/2017 21:32

I can second Skadar also. We were Podgorica based which isn't the most exciting place in the world. That being said it was central, cheap (the taxi meters start at 0 and count 5c every 150m) and I had the best meal of my life there to the point I would go back just for it. Budva is lovely but very touristy. Cetinje is worth spending an hour in.

Montenegro is on the front of yesterday's guardian to illustrate the heatwave in Europe! There was a river people were jumping in to cool off. Grateful for the tips here. Thank you
