Any recommendations please for central Barcelona hotels? Price range = budget to medium.

Have searched old threads and found lots of great tips on what to do, but there don't seem to be many recent hotel recommendations ...

TIA

MEdium: Condes de Barcelona, it used to be well priced some time ago, it is conveniently located at Paseo de Gracia. Ops, another non-recent recomendation...

Ooh SM, when are you going there? I went to Barcelona in March but I didn't stay in the city though. Can you check through expedia or lastminute.com. Nicer to have a recommendation thougg I suppose!

thanks chandra, that hotel looks fab but I think it's a little too pricey for our budget, so maybe I should've specified cheapo hotels only!

yes DG am planning to go for a week with DP (can i call him DP yet do you think lou? ) - never been there but have always wanted to!

did you go to the dali museum in figueres when you were there DG? it's on my list of must-sees

no I didn't SM . It's one of the places we really wanted to visit but sadly we went the day after the Madrid bombings so everything shut at lunchtime. We only got to the Picasso museum! I'd give it a miss if you were only going for a day but as you'll be there for a week, you may as well. You'll like the Arty area it's in anyway and lots of boutique's. I would go back again but there are lots of other places I'd like to see 1st. Perhaps when I move to Italy i'll just drive there!

When I was looking for hotels in Barcelona, the cheapest I found (I think) was about £100 a night. I'll have a search and see if I can find the site I used to book our hotel but I can;t do links though. Perhaps you can tell me how?

i had a look on e-bookers and expedia and they had some flight/hotel packages for 7 days from about £375 each which seems very reasonable (this is late september)

I stayed in the same one as whymummy - not at the same time! Thoroughly recommend. Cheap tapas bars nearby, nearest Metro 2 minute walk away. Little mini kitchen in the apartment and about £60 per night, great buffet breakfast each morning. Would stay there again when I go to Barcelona again.

don't remember where i stayed in Barcelona but thought it worth saying that taxis from airport to centre and in general round Barcelona are pretty good value.

whymummy · 13/07/2004 21:49

ah tinker it was you!!i knew there was another mumsnetter that had stayed at the atenea
the taxi from the airport to the atenea was 16 euros and it takes 10 min. El corte ingles is around the corner and a big shopping centre called l'illa is in walking distance for some serious shopping

Stayed about 1.5 hours out of Barcalona last year (self catering in a wonderful remote farmhouse -absolute bliss) - 2 day trips to the city though. The Dali museum in figueres is quite a drive away (we didn't manage to go). We had DS with us so missed out on tapas & all day red wine - had to pick the aquarium instead -which is quite good! Check out the cable car ride - its cool. Really jealous cos I want to go back !

lucky lucky you!!
I had a fab time there for my 40th last month (coincided with their summer solstice type festival so it was real party time!)
We stayed in a 3 star quite close to the Ramblas- so pretty central...
haven't unfortunately got all details as pal booked it but think it was called Hotel Ronde (or Ronda).. very nice and not too dear... but there are plenty of hostel type places around if you want cheap...
Have a fantastic time

thank you for the tips everyone!

we won't be hiring a car, but there is a train service up to figueres, and the dali museum does special night time tours (with cava), so i reckon we'll have an overnight stay up there as part of a 3-day out-of-town jaunt

i forgot to mention ... this is a child-free trip

Plus, definitely recommend a Dali exhibition. Went to the Dali gallery in St Petersburg, Florida, and had the guided tour. Absolutely fab stuff once it was all explained!

but the dali theatre museum in figueres isn't just an exhibition, it's a surrealist event in itself!

will certainly be checking out the galleries in barcelona itself though, and i'm particularly excited about seeing the sagrada familia

any top tips for the most romantic spot to visit?

update : I found a fab cheapo hotel - 75 euro a night for a double room with private bathroom and balcony overlooking las ramblas (top end near placa de catalunya). Got the hotel (Hotel Lloret) from the rough guide. We're going to be there for the merce festival - can't wait!
