Mini break in Berlin - what must we see?

We're off to Berlin soon. Never been before. A couple of us speak German.

What are the places that we absolutely must see?

Are there any restaurant recommendations?

DP would also like to do a day trip somewhere - we have a guidebook that recommends Potsdam, but are there any other places we could consider?

Book in advance to go up into the Reichstag dome.

Wall museum on Bernauer Strasse is excellent.

Trip out to the Olympic Stadium.

Here for chocolate cake

Holocaust Memorial is a must, just near to the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag. Remus is correct about booking the Reichstag... It's not for convenience either - it's a security thing. We didn't know and weren't able to get in during the three days we were there. Gutted, as it is a spectacular Norman Foster design.
We also enjoyed seeing Checkpoint Charlie.
On a completely different note, if you are a fan of Ritter chocolate bars, there's a cafe and shop where you can actually have one made to your own specification!

Yes to the Ritter shop!
Exhibition under the Holocaust Memorial is excellent.
Jewish museum excellent too.
Stasi museum v v interesting in terms of the site, although I wasn't hugely taken with the actual content of the exhibition.
Potsdam worth a look and an easy day out.

I love Berlin. Boat tour, open air bus tour great ways to get your bearings..it's a great walkable city (take comfy shoes!) . The v history of the place is fascinating and incredibly moving... The topography of terror outdoor exhibit, holocaust memorial, Berlin Story museum, walking tours are all a must,I think.

During the summer, wander to the river and find a beach bar and grab some travel beers at the spati along the way theculturetrip.com/europe/germany/articles/berlins-spati-culture/

Go up this rather than the TV tower - less queues, better views, lovely cafe at the top www.panoramapunkt.de/en/welcome.html

Have a stand up lunch here - the fried fish and mash is lovely www.rogacki.de

I loved The Ramones Museum.

Any particular beach bar recs, Bingo?

I'd highly recommend a walking tour on one of your first. We went on one that was well recommended on trip adviser and it was really interesting, very funny and told us loads about Berlin that we wouldn't have otherwise picked up.
