I'm accompanying DP to a conference in Amsterdam and will have a few hours to explore by myself one day and with him another. I've never been before and don't know where to start. Any tips?

Van Gogh Museum.

And a nice lunch somewhere. There are fab restaurants in Amsterdam.

The sex museum is brilliant. I've been twice
It's worth going just to use the toilets there!!

Blush I think the sex museum is out.

Van Gogh sounds great. I'll look up the park and see where I could hire a bike. Thanks!

Go on a boat tour then hire a bike and go to the van gough museum, get great pancakes at a pancake/Waffle House then go to riksmusuem, than Anne frank house.

No need for red lighting District or sex museum!!

Take a canal boat round trip, it's about an hour and will take you past some of the most beautiful areas of the old city.

The three big museums are right next to each other, Stedelijk (modern art), van Gogh and Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt, Vermeer etc.). Buy a ticket online if you want to go as all of them can be very busy.

Vondelpark is just around the corner from the museums, nice for a stroll or to sit with a coffee.

For shopping it's fun to explore the 'negen straatjes' - small streets with quirky shops between the historic canals right at the centre of the city.
And make sure you see Begijnhof if you are near there (you will be).

And eat chips, these are the best are sold from a hole in the wall right around the corner from Begijnhof. Buy the chips and wander up and eat them there.

Sunshineandlaughter · 04/05/2017 21:49

Yes yes and make sure you get mayonnaise or whatever the white sauce is with the chips

I didnt go to vondelpark it sound lovely but surely its a park?

Op Amsterdam is wonderful to simply walk around in itself, so many gorgeous streets and houses and canals to look at . I would try and go to gallery - and then head for 9 streets area, and just up from there Jordaan ( anne frank house is sort of between the two) wandering round there you cant go wrong.

BeMorePanda · 05/05/2017 17:30

re Vondelpark - its a park. Its nice but its #10 or lower of things to do when you are in Amsterdam for just a few hours. Unless you are really really really into parks and not into say art, or canals, or Anne Frank, or simply walking round a gorgeous and unique city soaking it all up, drinking tiny beers and smoking joints.

Also I was never particularly enamored with the Rijksmuseum - that's fairly low on my list too.

Lj8893 · 05/05/2017 17:30

Yes it's a very big park Smile it's lovely

midsomermurderess · 07/05/2017 17:35

Take one of the free ferries from behind central station across to Amsterdam Noord for a different perspective on the city. Or got to Oost, in the east of the city, quite hip now I suppose and it has a lovely park, preferable to the somewhat pedestrian Vondelpark. The Jordan area (broadly across from the Anne Frank House) is worth a wander too. Do, if possible, hire a bike.
