Portugal or Mauritius with 22 month old!!?

Ok it sounds like a stupid question doesn't it. Mauritius would be lovely in theory BUT I'm not sure I can stand the time difference messing up my ds's routine and the long flight (albeit overnight). I just can't decide what to do!

So - do we go with the easy but less exotic option of Portugal or bite the bullet and go for Mauritius (In late April btw)??

I don't think the time difference would be too much of a problem. +4hrs in winter +3hrs in summer i think.

I think i would be more worried about the 11hr flight - but once you are there, it is great!

I am the sort of person who just enjoys holidays though and if I picked somewhere nice in Portugal, would be just as excited to be going there. (As long as it was warm enough!)

I wouldn't worry about the time difference too much as children tend to adjust pretty quickly. I'd go for the exotic!

Mauritius is lovely, and only about 4 hrs ahead of us, but is is a blaardy long flight (12 hrs as I remember) If you do go, avoid flying with Air Mauritius, as they have nothing in the way of entertainment (3 or 4 tv screens for the whole plane to share and they played the same film twice and nothing in between!)

Go for the exotic - I'm taking my 25 mo to Brazil in April. Yes - I'm dreading flight (expecially as I will be 6 months pg), but the way I see it it is a small price to pay to go somewhere nice.

I think Portugal will be not quite warm enough.

Part of the problem is I have been to Mauritius before (pre ds) and know how lovely it is!

Good thing about air Mauritius is the flights are overnight both ways whereas BA is only overnight one way and there is no way I'm doing a 12hr day flight with ds.

Detox - that is so lame that they don't have seat back tvs in this day and age!

Agree Portugal might be a bit lukewarm.

Blimey maybe I should just toss a coin!

Mauritius.
The sea will be warm enough for a 22 month old to potter in and out of, and calm enough, too. As long as you can keep him in the shade, well covered up etc. it will be v relaxing.

I think we've voted for you - now piss off to Mauritius and have a wonderful time for the rest of us !!!!

(It was my first choice for holiday this year but couldn't quite stretch the budget that far - I'm green.

boo64 · 20/02/2007 12:20

No need to be quite so green with envy!! We have decided to bottle out and stick with Europe as the idea of small person sleeping on our laps for 12 hours (if lucky - not sleeping if unlucky) is too much!

So we'll save Mauritius for next year or another time when he is a bit older, needs his own seat and will be ableto go in kids clubs there.

Thanks all for the fab advice - it did help me work it through.
