London restaurant for a special occasion

I'm treating my DP for a birthday meal out soon - has anyone got any recommendations for a lovely restaurant in London? Any cuisine - it's more about atmosphere and food quality really.

Thanks in advance.

Can you narrow it down for us at all? Where retouch going to be staying, what's your budget, what kind of atmosphere do you like - romantic, hipster, luxury, etc

Glitterspy · 24/06/2016 19:48

Where are, not retouch, obviously!

Smiths of Smithfield - top floor, views over the City

Oxo Tower - views of the river

Bibendum - beautiful room

Without anything further to go on I'd recommend Terroirs, Trullo or Hakkasan Mayfair

Gilgamesh in Camden.

Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden

Clos Maggiore.

Ooh lots of lovely ideas! Thanks so much everyone.

To answer Glitterspy's questions - we live in London so we can get around easily - location isn't really a factor. I can push the boat out a bit budget wise so probably up to £100 per head. And as for atmosphere - romantic & special but not stuffy iykwim.

I really love Rules but I'm old school and traditional.

DetestableHerytike · 24/06/2016 20:58

Clos is romantic.

findyourbacon · 24/06/2016 20:58

Rules is lovely - we went there for my birthday a few years ago.

The Bleeding Heart is great and very romantic, altho not open weekends last time I looked. Le Coq d'Argent is lovely food but have only been at lunchtime when it's full of suits so not romantic and cosy. Le Gavroche is quite intimate feeling and the cheese trolley is amazing (Bleeding Heart also has an impressive cheese trolley). Overall I would choose Bleeding Heart if it was me.

Nobu on Park Lane if you like Japanese.
Scotts if you like fish and seafood.
The Ivy for British.

All 3 are lovely settings for a romantic and special occasion.

Bocca di Lupo in Soho? Lovely food.

Scotts is lovely - can still remember the amazing fish I had last time I was treated to a meal there!

I love the Skygarden.

Locanda Locatelli is lovely.

The River Cafe (my all time favourite restaurant....)
