My 40th - where to go in December

pjsgalore · 18/06/2016 08:24

I'd love to go away for three nights in December to celebrate my 40th - just me and my DH - but just can't think where. I'd love to go to Las Vegas, but a friend said it's too far for just three nights. (Saying three nights because I think that's as long as our childcare could stretch to!). ANY interesting/fabulous suggestions would be much appreciated!! Don't mind whether hot/cold/city/rural - totally flexible.

You could go to New York or Boston for 3 nights but you will be a bit tired
when you come home due to jet lag.
Prague is a beautiful city for a short break - plenty to do but not too big.
A bit chilly -snow but plenty of romantic haunts to warm up in.
Krakow in Poland is also good -a bit off the beaten track for The Brits.
If you go to a city make sure you have comfy walking shoes btw
If you are going before Xmas then you will be spoiled for choice esp in
Europe. Barcelona or Rome would offer milder weather but still tons to do

I'd do Kraków; beautiful, inexpensive and lovely Christmas markets.

concertplayer · 18/06/2016 09:37

Another Krakow fan President ! It has the largest Medieval square in Europe . Packed with culture esp theatrical .
On the other hand it is where people visiting the Auschwitz CC site stay.
You do not have to go there of course. Personal choice. It is a life experience seeing a place like that .People go to honour the perished.
Nothing ghoulish.

Krakow is a fabulous city even in winter. Prague is lovely too. Second the comments re comfortable footwear.

WeeM · 18/06/2016 09:50

Paris is amazing in Dec-the champs elysees has amazing Xmas markets. We have been 5 times and 4 of them were in Dec. The Latin quarter is our favourite place to stay. Or somewhere in scandavia perhaps-Stockholm, Copenhagen? Tallinn in Estonia is also lovely but I've only been there in summer.

Prague - fabulous in the winter, especially walking over the Charles bridge
Barcelona
Munich
Lisbon
Vienna
Vienna and Munich will have Xmas markets to walk around :)

SoThatHappened · 19/06/2016 14:00

Another vote for Lisbon

hifi · 19/06/2016 15:32

Florence is fabulous. we went in November and didn't need our coats on.

Florene · 19/06/2016 15:36

I went to Barcelona in December and it was lovely and warm - not hot, but pleasant enough for light clothing.

mrsmortis · 20/06/2016 10:54

Salzburg in December is a fairytale place. Christmas markets, an ice rink and carriage rides through cobbled streets. Yes it's cold, but it's magical too.

mummymeister · 20/06/2016 12:07

Iceland expensive but you could be out in the hot springs. German Christmas markets?

concertplayer · 20/06/2016 13:58

Yes Mummy M Rothenburg ob der tauber in Bavaria has the best Xmas market ever.
It is full of history and on the Romantic Road In Germany !

JodieX321 · 22/06/2016 15:40

Always recommend the canaries during winter!! I'm a real fan of tenerife & gran canariaSmile

Catnuzzle · 22/06/2016 15:46

We did Lapland for my December 40th. Met the fat man in the red suit. Awesome.

Allinafankle · 22/06/2016 20:13

Haven't been in winter - we went in September - but what about Porto? Lovely place. Or Berlin? Vienna would be magical in December and you could do an easy day trip to Bratislava in Slovakia - there's a special train / public transport ticket you can get and it only takes about an hour.

nmg85 · 23/06/2016 09:55

Madeira, Malta, Iceland, Barcelona, Krakow, Canaries, Tallinn.

alexandragimenez · 24/06/2016 10:49

Go to the Canary Islands!

T00Tired2016 · 26/06/2016 11:33

Prague - Christmas markets, historical sites eg cathedral and cafes. Visit old and new town

Benidorm - Something for everyone

Marrakech - Main market day & night

New York or Las Vegas sleep on plane and enjoy long days there

Tilly2004 · 21/10/2016 20:47

Where have you decided? I'm 40 on Boxing Day this year and we've just booked up 4 nights in New York 14th December! Taking our children though (14,12)

2014newme · 22/10/2016 22:01

New York. You can go to krakow any time

Allthebestnamesareused · 07/11/2016 13:36

as its a big one would your budget stretch to the Ice Hotel in Sweden? I am taking my DH there in January for his 50th as a surprise (but it is on his bucket list)

KeepCalm · 08/11/2016 14:17

Copenhagen, Love love LOVED it last Dec. Have been back this summer too.

dinkystinky · 08/11/2016 14:33

DH just took me to Venice for my 40th - was truly fab!

Dowser · 11/11/2016 20:51
