L'Escala / L'Estartit / Playa de Pals (Costa Brava) in August

We're a family of 4 with 2 teenagers (13 and 15) looking at the Costa Brava for a week in August. Does anyone have any experience of the above resorts?

I quite like the look of L'Escala but is it too small? What's the beach like?
Kids like the look of L'Estartit but I wonder if it's too busy.
Although the town of Pals looks really interesting, the beach seems a drive away and I'm thinking that perhaps if we stay at the beach we'll just be in a built up resort area.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've been to Estartit, but it was 20 years ago, so has probably changed. It was lovely and is high on the list for a return visit.

The actual beach in L'Escala town centre is quite small but a 10 minute walk and you'll get the beach that runs all the way up to the gorgeous hamlet of Sant Marti d'empuries. There is a carrilet ( sort of train on wheels thing) that runs between St Marti and L'Escala as well. There are also large beaches in the other direction at Riells and a really pretty cove at the other end of town called Cala Montgo.

Sant Marti is the best though :)
