Where to go for a special birthday?

Hi, I've got a big birthday coming up and would like to go somewhere really special and memorable. It would need to be short haul, maximum three nights with dh. Can anyone please help with suggestions? I want it to be amazing! Oh, and it's for winter time!

We went to Rome for my big birthday a couple of years ago. We went in November so not quite winter but the weather was lovely. If you do go to somewhere in Italy, you can (or at least could) get free entry to lots of big tourist attractions on your birthday- just show your passport.

I'd say Venice or Lisbon - we did Venice in Feb one year, and it was very atmospheric

I have a big birthday next year and really fancy Iceland and the northern lights or Norwegian fjords, what type of thing do you like doing?

Laska42 · 11/08/2015 21:51

We loved Copenhagen (we went in the winter, snow on the ground, but they know how to cope with it, everything was open, great shops andplaces to eat (we could never have afforded Noma even if we could have got in , but there are lots of other cool places to eat and drink) ..and it was very romantic exploring the city in the snow..

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been to Rome and Venice, but wouldn't rule them out. The only place I've been thinking of is Iceland as it sounds so different, but wasn't sure of the temperature in November. I love exploring in the day, then drinking and partying at night. Maybe something a bit romantic too.

What about Barcelona or Amsterdam? Would they be special/memorable enough?

Amsterdam would be brilliant

Crumbelina · 18/08/2015 22:32

Oooh, I'd definitely go to Iceland! Possibility of seeing the northern lights, blue lagoon, golden circle tour, some beautiful restaurants ... It'll be chilly but, like the UK, they also get the gulf stream so it shouldn't be super cold. I went in February and it wasn't unbearable.

Itsbloodyraining · 19/08/2015 11:27

That's good about the temperature not being unbearable. Any recommendations for accommodation? I hear the top hotels are megabucks, and we can't afford that!

Yep - we stayed at Castle House Apartments (they're on Trip Advisor - lots of good reviews). It's a 5 min walk to the centre of town from the apartments, so nice and central but not too noisy.

Iceland is quite pricey but it's sooo worth it for a special treat. I so want to go back!

Couldashouldawoulda · 20/08/2015 19:21

Iceland would be great. I loved Prague in the winter, romantic and beautiful.

oneowlgirl · 20/08/2015 19:23

Mr favourites would also be Venice or Verona or Milan Grin

HalfATankini · 20/08/2015 19:32

I loved Barcelona and Prague, Amsterdam not so much (its fine but a day trip's worth only imo).

queenofthepirates · 20/08/2015 19:33

Bratislava is nice, not too pricey, nice hotels and a day trip from Vienna. I went there for my last big birthday

Itsbloodyraining · 21/08/2015 06:40

I've now started to think about catching some winter sun in Barcelona! What would it be like in November?

bakingaddict · 21/08/2015 07:11

I would go somewhere properly cold like Moscow or St Petersburg so I could imagine myself to be in Dr Zhivago

Milliways · 21/08/2015 07:11

Marrakech will be warm and different?

IndigoApple · 21/08/2015 18:26

I've been to Barcelona in November. It was sunny and 17°C. I have photos of Christmas decorations with a bright blue sky behind. Even if bad weather you'd still have a fab time there.

Or how about Tallinn?

GoodtoBetter · 21/08/2015 18:29

Lisbon or Seville
