Can anyone suggest lovely place to base yourself for holidaying between Cairns and Port Douglas? Trying to find a location that is suitable for reception-age children. Activities, access to beach but child-friendly restaurants etc.

Hi Runwithwolves - we're just going to move this thread to a more appropriate topic so you can get the best response.

be aware that Cairns has no beach, and that if this is in the Aussie summer you won't be able to swim in the sea anyway unless there is jellyfish netting.

so question 1 - what time of year?

Cairns has a fantastic lagoon for the kids as pp says the sea is a no go most of the year. We stayed about 10 minutes North of Cairns can't remember right now the name of the place but the coast is pretty much made up of small holiday resorts with a few restaurants .most eating places are child friendly.port Douglas is lovely but not safe swimming for kids at sea. The markets are great there.

BTW stay out of the rivers too, man-eating crocodiles!
