snacks
books that he hasn't seen before or at least not for a while
a new squeaky toy
does your car seat have a tray? if yes, some little cars to push over it

Leave just before his daytime nap is due so he sleeps for a couple of hours.

Nursery rhyme song tapes. An old handbag with various unbreakable items in for him to take out (and inevitably drop on teh floor)..

Rice cakes or otehr snack that takes a while to consume...

If there is more than one adult in the car, be prepared to take turns sitting in teh back looking at books etc.

if at all possible I'd time it to coincide with sleep - still do that now with dds -(6 and 4) put them in their pyjamas and leave at 7 pm. top tip: if inclined to so this REMEMBER TO PACK HIS SHOES.

otherwise agree that food helps, tapes, singing, talking
