Its our anniversary so we'd like go away for a weekend without DC. Max 3 nights. Need to fly from Birmingham or Bristol.
First thought was Granada but have just looked at flights and no direct to Granada and is not as close to Malaya as I thought and don't want to spend 6 hours on travelling.
Any ideas?

What about somewhere in Ireland. Dublin for a city break or if you want a quieter time you could fly into Cork or Shannon. There is lots to do and the weather tends to be ok in September.
(I live in Ireland so I'm a bit biased)

Madrid.

Love it there - have been about 6 times now. Missed it last year as we ran out of weekends and feel bereft. The weather in September should be just nice - still warm.

Last year we spent a long weekend in Sitges. Flew to Barcelona and took the (short) train ride down to Sitges. Great place, v lively but not rowdy. Plenty of bars and restaurants - and lovely beaches. We went at the end of S eptember and the weather was perfect except for one day of v heavy rain.

I keep trying to plan a weekend in La Rochelle too for me and DH. We had a day there last summer but had the DC with us

September should still be okay there too, good weather and shops and restaurants etc still all open.

cheminotte · 10/03/2015 21:05

Hi gabs , we went to Dublin years ago and liked it but am looking for a little more exotic.

iwantgin - What is there to see and do in Madrid? Would you choose it over Barcelona which a few people IRL have recommended?

I'm afraid La Rochelle is too close as well, I know France quite well already.

Looking at flights, Copenhagen is a possibility, anyone been there?

I've been to Copenhagen twice. It's a beautiful city. Perfect for a weekend break and in September the weather should be ok.

Madrid - there are some good galleries - Am not a massive culture vulture but try and fit one in on each visit.

the Royal Palace is worth a visit
Retiro Park
Botanical Gardens

Lots and lots of bars - booze and tapas. Some great restaurants and shops.

I do like Barcelona too, but feel more at home in Madrid.

Iwasbornin1993 · 11/03/2015 17:40

Barcelona would be my choice definitely. So much to do there and you can usually always get cheap flights with easyJet or Ryanair.

ChippyMinton · 11/03/2015 17:43

Athens is fab.

Put Bristol/Brum into skyscanner with 'anywhere' as the destination, and see what comes up?

cheminotte · 12/03/2015 16:10

Excellent, thanks.
Chippy - yes I that's what I'm doing. Went to Athens years ago and although I enjoyed the sights, I was glad to move on it just felt so dirty and polluted, making my eyes sting.
DP is not a culture vulture at all, although happy to wander around in parks, look at interesting buildings.

Budapest. Is ace

rookiemere · 12/03/2015 16:23

I went to Madrid last year - I really enjoyed it, it's a great destination for a weekend break because it seems to have just the right amount of stuff to fill a weekend and loads of nice little tapas bars and a fabulous indoor tapas hall. Mind you I loved Barcelona as well when we went years ago.

This year DH and I are off to Venice for two nights whilst DS is on a school trip - the selection of lovely looking hotels is fab.

ChippyMinton · 12/03/2015 17:01

You'd be pleasantly surprised, I think. We went in November and it was lovely. Lots of buildings have been cleaned and the streets traffic free. Plus new museum. But still has Greek flavour.

cheminotte · 12/03/2015 21:02

Thanks Magmatic - been to Budapest already, loved it.

rookie - another vote for Madrid / Barcelona. Need to see if Venice is an option as well.

Thanks Chippy - maybe austerity has reduced pollution? But would like to go somewhere we've not been before.

We stayed at Yeatmans Hotel in the old district of Porto last August. Lots of wandering round old streets, visiting port cellars, boat trip up the Douro. Very relaxed, we sunbathed after breakfast each day before venturing out. Have also been to Venice for a long weekend in September but we felt as if we should sightsee more, it was less relaxed as there was more to do. Stockholm, Copenhagen & Budapest are all also interesting.

fleecyjumper · 21/03/2015 12:06

Barcelona or Madrid. I love Madrid but Barcelona has Gaudi's wonderful architecture to look at.

aoife24 · 29/03/2015 12:10

Lisbon is lovely as is Lyon.
