Silver wedding anniversary - where would you go?

Any suggestions please???

The scenario - it will be our silver wedding anniversary this year and I am also turning 50 (albeit in denial). So we want to go away without the children! We can get childcare for a week for DS2. Our timing for the holiday is limited to July or August because of our jobs. Or alternatively one week in early April. We can afford to throw a bit of money at this, but not excessively.

We don't like it too hot, but we live in Scotland so would like to see some sun! We like history, towns, museums, art galleries, restaurants. Luxury would be nice.

The only contender we have so far - on the enthusiastic advice of my parents - is a river cruise on the Danube.

We don't really want to do long haul because that is something I have to do this year for my job anyway.

What would you do?

Congratulations!
For our Silver anniversary we flew to Miami and stayed in the Park Central art deco hotel on Ocean drive for 3 nights. Saw lots of Miami. Then we drove down the Florida Keys, spent a night at Key Largo, then on to Key West for 2 nights, had a fantastic time staying at a wonderful B&B called the Mermaid and Alligator, then drove back up the Keys stopping a night on the way back up.
We then flew from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas and had a week at the Sandals resort lazing around and sunbathing - Sandals has its own private island too. We saw round the island and spent time sightseeing in Nassau.

We had a fab time!
I know you said not long haul, but once we arrived in Miami there were no great distances to travel. The Bahamas is only a 40 minute flight.

Congratulations.
We celebrated our Silver Wedding and my 50th two years ago by a short break in Iceland. Hm! Probably wouldn't get you much sun I suppose! We went at the February half term hoping to see the Northern Lights.

barcelona

April - Barcelona, Prague, Budapest, Madrid all fab city breaks but I wouldn't do July or August in any of them.

I'd do April or very early July in a European city - maybe an Italian one like Siena, Rome or Florence, or as mentioned Barcelona. We went to Barcelona at the end of October and it was 70 and sunny.

Or July in a Scandi city - Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen?

Moscow and St Petersburg. Fabulous museums, not too hot if you go in August (Moscow can be very hot in July. Great palaces and something different.

I would also throw Boston into the mix. You can even see whales in August! Everything else you want is there in abundance!

barcelona.. food and wine are so much cheaper in spain than anywhere else, you can afford to lush it up on the hotel, plus art and shopping and general mooching, barcelona is hard to beat.

It's my silver wedding this year and I turned 50 a few months ago. We are planning a trip to New York to celebrate both.

In the nicest possible way, I think you are too young for a river cruise on the Danube. You might be better off doing that for your golden wedding Grin
