Hints tips or other recommendations, DH spotted diggerland and is desperate to go, looks great on the website but I have my doubts.

Any other must see or dos in or near Durham?

TIA

DD aged 7 had a school trip to Beamish last year and all her class thoroughly enjoyed it.

Beamish is great and definitely worht a day's visit. However at this time of year it may not be properly open - you need to check. I think int he winter only the main town is open, for reduced entry fee, but not a full day at all if so. The sweet shop is lovely! DD loved her day there this summer.

Thanks I will check the times, PIL have been before, we are meeting up with them for the day as they are holidaying nearby. Sweetie shop is a must then .

Alnwick is a lot further north than I thought so we might give that a miss this time.

The mine at Alnwick really impressed ours this summer. Bet it is really cold and bleak in winter - wrap up warm.

Hexham jail was good and not that far from Durham. In Newcastle the "Centre for life" and "Seven Stories" were both really good museums for our 5 and 6 year old.

Mean the mine at Beamish!

The Lead Mining Museum at Killhope is good, with indoor and outdoor play areas and a good cafe. DS was disappointed at not being able to go down the mine though (no under 4s allowed).

Hi thanks everyone, we just got back today and really enjoyed Beamish and Killhope,

DD 7 didn't like going down the mine at Killhope, this was mainly due to having to walk through water for the first bit and getting her wellies full of water, so we headed out and she sat in front of the fire in one of the display rooms and warmed her toes up, thankfully we had our cases in the car so she had a change of socks and trousers. She spent ages bashing rocks though quite happily .
