CAR SEATS - WHEN TO MOVE TO STAGE1?

When i met my friend the other day she seemed horrified that dd (9mnths)was still in her stage 0+ infant carrier. I thought these lasted until baby was around 1 (or thats what the bumf says). Although dd is just about big enough for the stage 1 seat we have bought, i am concerned over which option would be the safer.

rear facing as long as possible.

Unfortunately both of mine were so chunky they were in stage 1 by 7 months.

rearward is definitely the safer , for as long as the seat is suitable(0+ ones go up to 12kg iirc). dd was almost 18 months before we switched her and in some countries it is normal to rearward face until preschool age and in some parts of US until at least 1.

I was thinking that rear facing was probably the safest. I have to say she is not normally a person i would take parenting advice from.

If your dc still fits then its not wrong and is safer.

I had to move dd to next size up before she was 9kg because she was so long she was sitting with her knees around her ears and was uncomfortable.

Your child should be able to sit unaided and should weigh over 20lbs. It diesnt matter if the legs are long in the seat so long as their head is not over the top of the car seat they are fine, and are safer rearward facing if you were to crash ( no-one likes to think about that but it happens) I used to fit car seats when I worked at Mothercare thats why I sound like an information booklet, hope this helps
