Accommodation in The Hamptons, NY

Next summer we're planning a 5-night stay in New York City, followed by 5 nights in The Hamptons, ideally near to (i.e. withing walking distance of) the beach. We can't afford top-notch accommodation, but can anyone recommend anywhere? We don't mind if it's hotel or a house/apartment.

I did exactly this this summer and have friends in the Hamptons so visit often. The Hamptons is expensive! But so worth it :-) The nicest accommodation types are guest houses/ B&Bs, where you share a big breakfast table with others each morning. Very nice and civilised! These are those big colonial type houses you see and it's a nice way to pick up ideas for the best vineyards, restaurants etc.

Otherwise, there are some motels which are perfectly serviceable, like the Soundview.

There is a website for the Long Island Wine Country which lists all the guesthouses and hotels in the area.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Lindsay81 - that is really helpful! Just the kind of guidance I needed. Thanks
