My husband has been granted some time off work (6 weeks) at fairly short notice. We're going in 2 weeks and have no itinerary yet. Planning on doing a mixture of camping and cottages (we've not camped since pre-children). We were thinking of exploring Germany, Italian lakes and Switzerland. Other than briefly visiting lake Geneva, we've not been to Switzerland before. Reading the lonely planet, all attractions described seem very grown up (hiking, vineyards, spas). Just wondering if anyone could give us a perspective of what Switzerland may offer a family with small children for a holiday? Thanks

I have grown up kids now but hopefully someone with children will answer. Bernese Oberlland, Murren is car free so good for strolling around with kids, has indoor swimming pool and a kids playground was just being completed above the village. Rides on cable cars and small mountain trains, throughout Lauterbrunnen valley , boat trips lower down on lakes. Watching the cows in the alpine pastures, trying to spot marmots., exploring trails ,
Check out the events listings for the areas you are interested in. Unexpectedly one year I came across a parade of St Bernard Mountain dogs in Grindelwald . There may be specific events on that are good for children.
Switzerland is expensive for food so stock up on supplies before you get there

There are some good deals on public transport and I've had lots of recommendations for youth hostels and farm stays.

This webiste is really good and I have the app so you can search by age and location.

We've just taken our 2 year old to Switzerland for a fortnight around the Bernese Oberland and she loved it. Some swiss trains and boats have play areas on them, and even the smallest village has a playground - most were almost new and very well looked after.
We were near a lake so feeding the ducks and splashing were top activities.
She loved the cable cars and the playgrounds on Grindelwald (one at the top of the mountain by the restaurant and one midway down). The tourist office will tell you which hiking routes are buggy friendly if you use one.
It was very child friendly but food was very expensive - and most kids meals offered are chicken and chips, spaghetti or pizza for about £9. They did do smaller toddler portions when asked. We camped to avoid the high cost of food and stocked up in France on the way over. The campsites were great and had really good family washrooms with novelty elephant showers, baths and sinks at child heights.
