Lake District - The Samling - or Scotland... thoughts please?

40 next month. Trying to work out where on earth to go for a weekend. Part of me thinks bustling city where I can do lots of stuff and drown my sorrows - still thinking about Lille or Bruges, although journey time to latter sounds tad extreme. Part of me thinks somewhere stunningly beautiful, where can hole up, go for walks, maybe even a bike or horse ride, and then drown my sorrows. The Samling in the Lake District looks gorgeous - quite fancy Scotland as well. Have been to neither before, and feel it's about time I bloody well did. Thoughts please on how to make the most of this impending day of doom?

At the risk of being predictable I would say Edinburgh- it would tick pretty much all of your boxes, as it's a bustling city that's also stunningly beautiful

Perthshire in the Autumn is absolutely stunning. hOw about Crieff Hydro? Dunblane? Dunkeld? All gorgeous. Peth itself is a lovely town.

You could stay at Malmaison if you come to Edinburgh, and there are loads of lovely bars and restaurants.

Hmmm. I love the great outdoors, but if 'drowning your sorrows' became a bit literal, in a downpour, would you be ok in a rural retreat? Cities are generally a better bet for ashort break if it does pour down and you don't want to walk in full hard-weather gear!

Barcelona is a vibrant place to go for a weekend, plus at this time of year the weather will be better than the UK. Try to stay on Las Ramblas as its the most happening street there.

Whoops sorry just realised it wasn't an open question.
I would check out the www.tripadvisor.com reviews of the Samling, bit of a mixed bag for that price. The lake district is fab, but it does tend to be cold & rainy at this time of year, as does Edinburgh.

Thanks - still haven't made mind up!
