40th birthday trip - what and where?

My friend and I are both 40 next year (OMG) and would like to celebrate by going somewhere a bit special (with DHs). She originally wanted New York but I'm not keen on flying, so I'm trying to think of something a bit "different" rather than a million miles away, eg Orient Express (although she says it is too stuffy for such young people as us ). So Mners, it's up to you - I know you'll come up with something brilliant. Price not too much of a problem for the right trip... thanks

How about Portmeirion? I've not been, but would love to - it looks wonderful.

Certainly a bit different anyway.

that would certainly be different! thinking of something perhaps a bit glamorous or exciting - bit of a once in alifetime thing. any suggestions anyone?

No suggestions, but I'd LOVE to do the Orient Express.

Portmeirion is magical.
It's just down the road from me.

For my 40th next year, have ordered dh to sort out sleeper to Plymouth (?) then helicopter over to Scillies to stay in super duper hotel.

Yes Portmerion is fab

I am taking dh dogsledding in Finnish Lapland for his 40th. Don't think you could get there without flying but you can do something similar in scotland here

CD,can imagine you wrapped in furs, quaffing aquavit.

CountessDracula · 13/09/2006 09:34

Quite

Sadly the reality will probably be me wrapped in polartec being dragged along behind a pack of baying huskies covered in dog shit and snow

We are staying in a log cabin with its own sauna and open fires ahh bliss.

moondog · 13/09/2006 09:35

Still sounds fun.
I want to go one one of those 'Looking for the northen lights' jaunts.

CountessDracula · 13/09/2006 09:37

Well hopefully we will see those too. And do some snowmobiling, James Bond stylee

We went on a Baltic Cruise for my 40th. It was fantastic.

Maybe a 2/3 day cruise??
